VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

mozy vmware
Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware -- which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware's official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn't so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it's the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware's curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, "Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering." He adds that the move will allow VMware to "further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities" of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don't need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy's service without interruption.

In-app payment support arrives on Android

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps -- like the ones pictured above -- can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

Face.com kills developer APIs and Klik app three weeks after Facebook acquisition

face-com-kills-developer-apis-facebook

A ripple went through Face.com's developer community three weeks ago when the company was acquired by Facebook. After all, what earthly reason would the social network have for continuing third-party developer support of the product? None, as it turns out -- API support for the firm's mug recognition software will be dropped in early August, and its iPhone app, Klik, is now gone from the App Store. Despite recent assurances to the contrary (pictured above) Face.com pulled the plug in order to devote its resources to Zuckerberg and Co., according to an email it sent to developers. Naturally, the sudden reversal has inflamed that group, with prominent members tweeting language like "boycotting" and "months of work wasted." There's a sliver of hope, however, for forlorn developers -- at least one member of the community says he's been granted an API extension through October. In the meantime, developers will likely be venting -- and won't even be able to track that rollercoaster of emotions anymore.

A Bunch of Unused PCs Won't Be Able to Go Online Monday

Anywhere from 250,000 to 500,000 computers worldwide may lose Web access Monday morning if their users don't manage to remove malware called "DNSChanger" from their machines. Toyota sends out free Entune upgrade, adds three app and voice control

Got a Toyota with Entune? Then keep an eye on your mailbox. We're getting word that a free upgrade has started to be sent out to customers. The refresh adds some of the apps we first heard about back in January last year: iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com and OpenTable. As well as being able to enjoy more radio, book movie tickets and restaurant tables, a new voice recognition update means you can do even more while keeping your eyes on the road. Toyota says that it'll be upgrading most models, if you want to know for sure, tap up the more coverage link for the breakdown.

[Thanks, Nate]

Pimp!t for iPhone review

Pimp!t is an app for creating wallpapers for your iPhone. It has a lot of a great backgrounds, shelves, and icon skins that can be mixed and matched to create something that reflects you. You can also browse through user-created templates for inspiration or to use.

When creating a wallpaper, there are three different categories: backdrops, shelves, and icon skins. To switch categories, just swipe up and down. Swiping left and right will switch between choices in the current category. The selection of backgrounds is really great and most are nice and simple without busy, distracting elements that clash with icons.

The user-created section is awesome for people who just want to find something completed and ready to use. What's really great about this part of the app is that you can scroll though a list of thumbnails. I can usually tell from a thumbnail if I'm not going to like it, so being able to skip those choices is convenient.

After creating your own wallpaper or finding a user-created one you want to use, just tap Pimp!t to save it to your Camera Roll. Pimp!t will also give you directions on how to set your saved photo as your wallpaper. You can also select a box to opt-in to share your design with other Pimp!t users.

The good

  • Great selection
  • Mix and match backgrounds, shelves, and icon skins
  • Browse through user creations

The bad

  • Can't mark favorites
  • No thumbnail view to see many options in a category at once. It would be nice to scroll though them all.

The conclusion

When I first learned about Pimp!t, I admittedly wasn't too excited about the idea because there are already so many other apps in the app store with similar functionality. But a big problem I have with many of those other apps is that I don't like their selections. With Pimp!t, I have a completely different problem -- the inability to decided between the many different wallpapers because I like so many of them. Because of this, I wish there was a way to mark a background as a favorite so that I could easily compare the ones I like most side-by-side.
