Angry Birds Space gameplay gets revealed -- briefly (video)

We've already gleaned that the extra-terrestrial edition of Angry Birds will involve some sort of gameplay departure from the add-on style of previous versions, but gameplay-wise there's been less information. Fortunately, makers Rovio has now leaked out a very brief taster in its lastest video. You'll have to skip to the three-minute marker, but you'll get a glimpse at some anti-gravity avians, bubbles, explosions and atmosphere re-entries. Take a look for yourself after the break.

[Thanks Ville]

Buzz Shakes Off Clutter With Streamlined Contacts Management

I haven't lost a phone number in about 10 years. That's thanks in part to never having lost a cellphone or dropped it into a large body of water -- not in the last decade, anyway. And now that cloud syncing services are easy to use, even a missing or broken phone doesn't necessarily mean you'll have to resort to one of those sheepish "send me your numbers" posts on Facebook.

It's Business as Usual for Anonymous as Panda Takes a Hit

The hacktivists known as "Anonymous" have retaliated following Tuesday's news of the arrests of LulzSec hackers exposed by their former leader, Hector Xavier Monsegur. Overnight, Anonymous hackers took down more than 25 websites belonging to Panda Security. They also posted email addresses, usernames and passwords of more than a hundred of the firm's employees and defaced a number of marketing-related sites.

Skype for Mac gets mild refresh, adds auto updates and improved UI in group calls

We know you've had your fair share of troubles adjusting to the fifth iteration of Skype for Mac. Now, Microsoft is issuing yet another quick refresh to go along with the support for HD calls and Lion. This time, though, the desktop app is adding automatic updates -- which should come in handy for those who aren't fans of manual labor -- as well as the promise of an improved UI in group calls, the ability to delete convos and disable audio gain control. Additionally, you'll now be able to use full-screen mode if you're running Apple's King of the Jungle OS. Skype version 5.6 is up for grabs now at no cost, and you can upgrade via the source link below or directly from the application on your machine.

NVIDIA dares to question Apple's unquestioned facts

Tegra 3

Fun fact about Apple events: You see a lot of clean slides and graphs and charts and stuff. Often, they're too clean. At Wednesday's iPad event, Apple claimed its A5X processor performs four times better than NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 processor.

And that's all it said. No real numbers, no benchmarks, nothing, a point that NVIDIA noted in talking to ZDNet.

This isn't exactly a new phenomenon, folks. Pick any example you want, but I'll take you back to the summer of 2009, when Apple looked right at a room full of people at WWDC and lied about the number of apps available on other platforms.

It's a marketing game. We get that. And we know that you Android folks are smarter enough not to buy into it.

Chrome for Android updated with bugfixes

Chrome for Android

Get thee to thy nearest Android Market Android apps section in Google Play, as there's an update to the Chrome for Android browser. What's new, you ask? Bugfixes, says Google, including a bigun' that was keeping Chrome from starting up on some versions of Ice Cream Sandwich. (That's kind of a big deal because Chrome for Android only works on Ice Cream Sandwich.

Anyhoo. Download links are after the break if you need 'em.

Apple ups over-the-air download limit to 50MB for iOS

App Store
This tid-bit didn't warrant a lot of attention during Apple's presentation today, but it's definitely worth noting: the limit on downloads from the App Store is now 50MB over-the-air, instead of a paltry 20MB. Now, anything larger than that and you'll still need to hop on a WiFi network, but you probably don't want to chew through your data plan that quick any way. So, enjoy downloading Jaws Revenge without the aid of 802.11.

Hands On With The New iPad

header1I've just gotten out of a quick hands-on session with the new iPad (and yes, it's just called the iPad), and have come away with exactly the feeling I expected to have: that I need to buy one. The first thing you should know, and also the reason there aren't many pictures, is that as far as weight and shape, it's almost exactly the same as the iPad 2. They wouldn't allow comparison shots — probably because the new iPad is a little thicker — but the dimensional differences are minor and the overall feel is near-identical. Let me tell you why I'm going to buy the new iPad. Or rather, let me show you.

Heyzap Launches An API, Uses It To Build A Mobile Gaming Map

san francisco game check insHeyzap, a startup that allows users to check in as they play their favorite mobile games, is now releasing its data through an API. The API focuses on two types of information — games and players. Through the API, a developer can see which games are trending based on usage, or they can bring up a list of who has checked in to each title. Heyzap says developers could also look up information about individual players, such as their profile and check-in history.
