PlanGrid Builds A New Market For The iPad: The Construction Industry

Screen shot 2012-03-03 at 01.09.45Mark this up as one more crucial chapter in the much-thumbed book called "The Consumerization of IT": a new app has launched from a Y Combinator-backed startup that offers builders the ability to store, manage and view blueprints on and iPad tablet. The unique selling point for PlanGrid, as the app is called, is that it promises to present building blueprints in a far more efficient way than they have been presented before. But on a more general level, PlanGrid is a sign of how the iOS platform is maturing and attracting a new wave of developers who target specific enterprise verticals with solutions tailored to their business needs.

Samsung Galaxy S Advance sets a fire in the FCC

Where you may see GT-I9070P, we see a variant of Samsung's Galaxy S Advance that's been pushed through the FCC's sausage machine and lived to tell the tale. We gave the mid-range handset a thorough going-over at MWC, where we found it to be attractive for a phone of its modest stature. It's got the usual array of GSM/GPRS/EDGE and vanilla-HSPA bands we'd expect a budget handset to include, as well as WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC. Now that it's emerged from the FCC, we can start hoping a domestic version of the device will arrive, but it's more likely this is just for those weary travelers from far-flung lands.

Life as a Comcast Cable Tech, the Rap Song [Video]

You'd think that a Comcast-themed version of 2 Chainz' "Spend It" couldn't help but slip into absurdist parody. But you'd be wrong. This is a legitimately fun and a little adorable rap song about being a Comcast cable tech. More »

Pentax offers 'special edition' K-5 DSLR kit: silver body, 40mm slimline lens, $1,600

Pentax K-5 special edition kit with 40mm f/2.8 lens
It's good to see a special edition that may actually deserve its name, for once. When the silver version of the popular K-5 came out last year, it was priced at $1,700 body-only. This new kit, which will be limited to 1,500 units worldwide and available from April, will cost just $1,600 including the bundled lens. And it's decent glass: an ultra-thin, Marc Newson designed beauty with a 40mm fixed focal length and f/2.8 aperture -- just like on the mirrorless K-01. The only thing missing? There's no sign of a "Limited Edition" stamp anywhere on it, but luckily we're too modest to notice.

Playdom Says Marvel Superheroes Are Super Viral (Among Men)

marvel avengers allianceSocial game-maker Playdom officially launched Marvel: Avengers Alliance on Thursday, and executive producer Chia Chin Lee says the title is already disproving some of the common assumptions about social games. The big assumption: that men don't like to share their activity in social games the way that women do. That could be a problem for Avengers Alliance, since a game about superheroes would probably skew male. But during the beta test period, when the game was played by tens of thousands of users, it actually saw 45 percent more viral installs compared to most Playdom titles, and in fact men were four to six times more likely to send in-game messages.

Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps -- and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru -- though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby's, Finish Line, Macy's, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

What's Apple Hiding in B82?

It's no secret that Apple will unveil the new iPad 3 at its March 7 event for journalists next week. The coy and vague invitations to the event featured an iPad-looking image, with the words, "We have something you really have to see. And touch." Beyond the hope for a wicked-sharp new iPad 3 screen and speculation about a beefier processor, a whole different set of rumors has been gaining momentum.
