Court Reportedly Rules Against Apple In China As The iPads Keep Rolling Out Of Foxconn

chinapple2A local court in the Guangdong province of China has apparently ruled against Apple in its ongoing case against Proview over the iPad trademark, with the decision that distributors should stop selling iPad tablets in China. The news is a step in the opposite direction from last week, when it looked like Apple was gaining the upper hand over Proview, with a court ruling in Apple's favor, and new documents that seemed to indicate Apple legitimately bought "iPad" from the troubled Chinese hardware company. But while that Apple China story continues to remain murky, another one is getting more light shed on it: amid the saga around working conditions at the Foxconn plants that make Apple devices like the iPad comes a new video of what life is like inside one of the plants that make them.

Digital Innovations Universal Speaker Dock for Android Review

When Julie, The Gadgeteer, asked if I would like to review Digital Innovations’ speaker dock for Android smartphones, I jumped on the chance. I had just been asking myself if there was a speaker dock out there for Android Smartphones. I know there are plenty of them available for iPhones and iPods, but I had never [...]

Latest Xperia U (ST25i) leak shows 2012 Xperia family portrait

Android Central

The latest images of the already extensively-leaked Sony Xperia U show a comparison with its big brother, the Xperia S. The Xperia U -- also known by its model number, ST25i, or its codename, 'Kumquat' -- is expected to be Sony's principal mid-range smartphone for 2012. Today's images mostly confirm what we already know -- that the Xperia U will share a number of design cues with the Xperia S, most notably the transparent notification bar at the bottom of the device.

Spec-wise, the Xperia U is rumored to pack a 1GHz dual-core CPU, a 3.5-inch qHD or WVGA display and 512MB of RAM, with a 5MP rear camera. Like the Xperia S, it'll run Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the latest Xperia UI, and we'd expect a bump up to Android 4.0 soon after release.

We're expecting to see the Xperia U unveiled at Sony's Mobile World Congress press conference next Sunday in Barcelona. In the meantime, you can find more photos after the jump.

Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adapter Review

I reviewed a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-Portable Drive and eSATA Upgrade Cable  a while ago (see related posts for a link to the review), and I’ve been using the drive since.  I replaced my Dell computer with a MacBook since that review, so I can no longer use the eSATA cable with the external disk.  [...]

Adblock Plus developer pokes holes in Mozilla's new add-on performance tests

Wladimir Palant, developer of the most popular add-on in the world, Adblock Plus, is also an active contributor to the Planet Mozilla blog community. Over the last few days, in response to Mozilla's new name and shame list of slow add-ons, Palant has been investigating whether Mozilla's testing methods are actually accurate.

Rather surprisingly, it turns out that Mozilla's numbers could be significantly wrong -- and if they're not wrong, the factors that Mozilla uses to tabulate an add-ons final score should definitely be made more transparent.

In the first set of tests, Palant shows that FlashGot's position in the top 10 is probably due to a fault in Mozilla's testing setup, and that add-ons can perform very differently depending on which operating system they're being tested on. In the second analysis, Palant uncovers an irregularity that doesn't seem to have an obvious cause -- but it could be due to an I/O bottleneck on Mozilla's test machines. Basically, even though performance testing of Read It Later is disabled because of a bug, it still (somehow!) manages to record a 14% slow-down on Windows 7.

Palant concludes both analyses by scolding Mozilla for going public with the performance data before its testing methods had been confirmed accurate. It definitely looks like Mozilla has been more than a little reckless, considering the importance of Firefox's add-on ecosystem.

Blockbuster On Demand pulls back from TiVo and others, is it on its way out?

From Zatz Not Funny comes word that TiVo owners are being notified their access to Blockbuster On Demand will come to an end March 31st, ending a run originally announced three years before. While this certainly affects TiVo's ability to offer the one box to search multiple services idea introduced with the Premiere, it could be more telling about Blockbuster's plans for the current incarnation of its internet movie service. As forum posters on TiVo Community point out, the list of supported devices is rapidly shrinking, with Vizio and Western Digital WD TV Live owners getting their own Dear John letters only a year or so after the app originally rolled out. Currently, the list of connected TV devices is limited exclusively to Samsung HDTVs and Blu-ray players, plus some cellphones and tablets. Once upon a time, Blockbuster desired an On Demand presence in "nearly every connected device" -- not to mention "major market presence" for the now Redbox-owned Express kiosks -- but after its purchase by Dish Network clearly those days are over. Now the only question is if / when we'll see a new service that better fits with the already announced Movie Pass package and what devices it might work on.

SureFire Warranty Review

Over the years I have reviewed many SureFire products. Most people agree SureFire products are extremely well made with rock-solid performance (aka the Cadillac of flashlights).  But an overarching comment/theme from readers has been they can buy an (nearly) equivalent device for (much) less money. Nine times out of ten, that is a true enough [...]

The Air Force's Crazy Plan to Launch Nuclear ICBMs from a Cargo Plane [Nukes]

When you think ICBM, things get Freudian—a long, slender missile erupting from an underground silo or submarine bay, gliding upwards. You probably don't consider a giant missile dumped from the back of a plane. The Air Force did. More »
