Why Facebook Is Missing From Apple’s New Desktop OS

Facebook is the dominant player in social media, but its direct integration is nowhere to be found in Apple's desktop and mobile operating systems. It's a glaring omission considering Facebook updates are a simple drop-down menu choice in Android and Windows Phone.

Ways In Which Aspirin Is and Is Not Effective Birth Control for Women [Aspirin]

Prominent Rick Santorum Super PAC booster and probably insane kabillionaire Foster Friess created a kerfuffle today by saying that women should just put aspirin between their legs for contraception. No really, he did! But rather than dismiss him as a dangerous crackpot with a reckless anti-woman agenda, let's examine his claim at face value. More »

ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear

ChromeLite ASCII extension
Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here's your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn't really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted -- such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) -- and some fun ASCII art, but that's about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work -- so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools' joke -- and indeed, an annoying 'you can uninstall this!' message appears at the top of every page -- but we're kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

Android app permissions - How Google gets it right ...

And how we, the users, still need to take responsibility

Android permissions

There's been a lot of news lately about a lapse in either security or judgment -- both, really -- at Apple that allows iOS applications to borrow your contact data and send it off to parts unknown without your consent. Apple has addressed the issue to members of the U.S. Congress, and will take steps to hold tighter control in a future iOS update. That's good news, and we're glad to see it happening.

But what about Android? During all this focus on apps doing things without explicit user permission, you see people referring to the Android permissions model. We're going to break it all down for you.  It's not perfect, but it works pretty well -- and it's certainly better than no permission system at all.

Let's walk you through permissions on Android, and how you need to be sure to do you part.

The First $5 LED Bulb Comes With a Catch [LEDs]

Besting both incandescents and fluorescents when it comes to energy-efficiency and eco-friendliness, LED bulbs unfortunately still haven't caught on because they're still too expensive. And even with a sub $5 price tag, the Pharox 200 Blu still isn't the perfect alternative. More »

This 48" Air Powered Hockey Table Is Your Puck Smashing Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

The one major sport I never got into is hockey. Largely because I never played it, having grown up in sunny smoggy LA and all. But it totally seems like a fine sport! It's also well air-conditioned! But my biggest beef with hockey is that I can never figure out who the best player on the ice is (without being told). THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME. It's not like basketball where you can immediately spot the sculpted arms and witness the dominance of its players. It's not like football where even though players are hidden behind protective gear, you can see a quarterback hit a hot streak. It's not like baseball where it's an individual sport masquerading as a team sport. I guess it's sort of like soccer but even in soccer you can see individual brilliance. In hockey, it's an orchestra of beauty. Every part needs to work together. I'm American, I don't care about that. I want individual greatness. That's why I like Air Hockey. You control your own destiny. Get a Medal Sports 48-inch Air Hockey table for $20 and support America. -CC More »

ASUS delays Ice Cream Sandwich for Transformer, aims for 'Feb / March 2012' release

Looks like that Google approval's taking a little longer than expected. ASUS just announced that the Android 4.0 update for its first Transformer tablet now likely to land between now and next month. We've just inched over the mid-February deadline last offered up by the company and this new, vaguer release date arrives from ASUS's Singapore arm. The Ice Cream Sandwich-flavored refresh will be sent over-the-air; that is, when it finally arrives on the keyboard-courting slab.
