Keen On… David Lowery: How The Internet Is Shafting Musicians (TCTV)

Screen Shot 2012-02-15 at 11.16.23 PMNot everyone agrees with BitTorrent founder Bram Cohen that the Internet has been good for the musician. Indeed, some musicians think the exact reverse. Take, for example, David Lowery, the lead singer for the bands Camper Von Beethoven and Cracker - a Platinum artist who now also teaches "rock economics" at the University of Georgia. According to Lowery, who claims that he has "data" to back up his argument, things are actually worse for the musician now than they were in the good/bad old days of big labels and even bigger limousines.

Why Facebook Is Missing From Apple’s New Desktop OS

When iOS 5 launched last year, Apple sent the world a very strong statement: It wants to embrace social media, but in its own way. We can now consider Thursday’s developer preview of Mountain Lion, the latest version of Apple’s desktop OS, an addendum to the company’s social media philosophy. Both iOS and Mountain Lion [...]

The Engadget Interview: Duracell President Stassi Anastassov on future battery tech (video)

It's 2012, and we're connected to the web every second of every day. And then, near the end of each daily cycle, it all stops. "My battery is dead." Is it really your battery that's become depleted? Of course it's not, though it certainly feels as though it might as well be. Stassi Anastassov experiences that daily setback just like you and I and the rest of the world. But the Duracell President and long-time Procter and Gamble executive is in a position to find a way around it, and that's exactly what he plans to do. We sat down with Anastassov in our New York City office to chat about the past, present and future of battery tech, and we even had a chance to meet the Duracell Bunny (yes, that furry hare was property of the "Trusted Everywhere" company long before it made its move to Energizer). So how does P&G plan to transform the portable power industry, and what's that Duracell Powermat joint venture all about? You'll find the answers to those questions and more in our interview just past the break.

How the Technology Behind Nanosecond Trading Could Make Markets Go Haywire [Economics]

The afternoon of May 6, 2010 was among the strangest in economic history. Starting at 2:42 p.m. EDT, the Dow Jones stock index fell 600 points in just 6 minutes. Its nadir represented the deepest single-day decline in that market's 114-year history. By 3:07 p.m., the index had rebounded. The "flash crash," as it came to be known, was big, unexpected and scary - and a new study says flash events actually happen routinely, at speeds so fast they don't register on regular market records, with potentially troubling consequences for market stability. Nature Publishing Group Officially Launches New Interactive Textbook

Image (1) princbio1.jpg for post 214500Last spring I wrote about Nature Publishing Group's plan for a $49 electronic textbook packed with interactivity and unlimited content updates for life. The original publication date was scheduled for September 1, 2011, but for a variety of reasons the release was pushed back. Today marks the official launch of "Principles of Biology". This book is "born digital", according to Vikram Savkar, SVP & Publishing Director at Nature Publishing Group, and is the first in a line of texts that NPG plans to release for the life and physical sciences. It's not an e-book or fancy PDF, but a dynamic interactive website that can be customized by the instructor, contains built-in assessments that students can take, and works appropriately on any device that can access it: desktop, tablet, or phone.

The First $5 LED Bulb Comes With a Catch [LEDs]

Besting both incandescents and fluorescents when it comes to energy-efficiency and eco-friendliness, LED bulbs unfortunately still haven't caught on because they're still too expensive. And even with a sub $5 price tag, the Pharox 200 Blu still isn't the perfect alternative. More »
