Stem Cells Could Help Heal Broken Hearts [Medicine]

Even after recovery, heart attacks can leave a lasting mark on your ticker—scar tissue weakens the muscle and prevents it from functioning as well as it did before seizing up. A pioneering stem-cell procedure, however, could cut the damage in half. More »

BlackBerry PlayBook Dock revealed in back room of DevCon

Somewhere, in a dark room at the back of DevCon, someone was showing off a bundle of PlayBook gear marked "Top Secret." BlackBerry Czech was able to grab some pics (more at the source link) of a keyboard case that handles multi-touch and the long-desired docking station for the currently moribund slate. According to the site, the dock offers HDMI-out, three USB ports and even an ethernet jack to let you surf without WiFi. Apparently it's got a hefty wireless receiver / speakerphone that would allow you to make VoIP calls from your PlayBook. What's not mentioned is if we can expect to see this available for some cold, hard currency any time soon (hint: get it on shelves). On the same post, there's also a mention of the mythical 10-inch second generation edition of RIM's device, but no photos were allowed -- so we'll just have to file that under "Hmmm" until we get closer to MWC, shall we?

The Bulldog Security Deluxe 500 2-Way Vehicle Starter System Is Your I-No-Longer-Fear-The-Cold Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

For some reason the wheel is often identified as mankind's greatest invention. But let me tell you, it's not. Do you know what is? The remote control. I don't care if it's for your TV, your radio, your toy helicopter, or even your folding mattress, being able to do things remotely is mankind's greatest gift to itself. If I have to do something why should I have to go somewhere to do it? I want, nee demand, to be able to do it from afar, without reaching, stretching, or straining myself. And ladies and gentlemen, that's where the remote enters the picture. Without it I would never be able to change the channel, turn up my Styx, snap an awkward group photo, or even start my car on a cold winter's morn in my pajamas like this $60 Bulldog Security Deluxe 500 2-Way Vehicle Starter System with LCD Screen and Trunk Release allows. That's half the regular $120 asking price for *Alexander M. Remote's greatest invention. (*I probably made him up.) -AL More »

Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GSM) extended battery now available in the UK

Take a look at our hands on with the GSM Galaxy Nexus extended battery

Android Central

There is still a distinct lack of official accessories for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. While we're still eagerly awaiting the arrival of such tasty treats as the vehicle and HDMI docks, there is at least one which has made it over to UK shores.

Available now from MobiCity, the 2000mAh extended battery and replacement battery door will set you back £49.95. We really like this battery, and the replacement door adds a slight thickness to the phone which actually makes it nicer to hold in the hand. Hit the source link below to head over to the product page.

Canon PowerShot G1 X review

Canon's G1 X boasts a beefy 14-megapixel resolution and a tank-load of ambition. Its mandate, no less, is to deliver the image quality and control of a DSLR inside the discreet body of a compact, aiming to attract serious photographers who want to travel light or supplement their main kit. That's why the G1 X houses a substantial 1.5-inch CMOS sensor, stretching to around 80 percent of the size of APS-C, along with an anti-minimalist array of dials, knobs and buttons to provide quick access to manual settings. It also explains why the G1 X is 30 percent heavier than both its evolutionary ancestor and some of its competitors, and why its price tag is equally hefty: $800, which is SLR-like in all the wrong ways. We've had this shooter long enough to gather our thoughts, but as to whether it deserves a smile or a snarl, you'll have to read on to find out.

European Commission clears Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility

Android Central

The European Commission has cleared Google's proposed buy-out of Motorola Mobility, the company has announced on its official blog. Google has hailed the EC's decision as an "important milestone" which brings the acquisition closer to completion. It was reported last week that the U.S. Department of Justice looks set to approve the deal too, and Google says it's awaiting confirmation from just "a few more jurisdictions" before everything's finalized.

Google and Motorola Mobility announced the deal last August, with Google paying a cool $12.5 billion for the manufacturer. This gives Google control of Moto's extensive patent portfolio, which will no doubt prove useful in the on-going legal battles between Android OEMs and Apple. In today's blog post, Google restated its belief that the acquisition will help "supercharge Android" and offer users "faster innovation, greater choice and wonderful user experiences."

Help Bob make money in Sticks, a fun physics game

sticks
Sticks is another one of those rare games where the intro is actually worth watching. It introduces you to office worker Bob, who is basically a wage slave fantasizing about a better existence.

Then, on his way back home from another grueling day at the office, he passes a huge sign which says "Sticks." This is where the game starts.

Each level has a number of coins hovering in mid-air, and your goal is to place sticks that lead those coins to Bob -- but you only have a limited amount of wood to play with. As soon as you're done placing your sticks strategically, hit the big Play button and let nature, or rather gravity, run its course. The coins will drop down, and if you place your sticks correctly, they will roll all the way to Bob.

The soundtrack is soothing and playful, and didn't get on my nerves even after playing for quite a while. All in all, a very cute game, especially for a day at the office.

Klinggon Earphone Cable Cord Manager

No matter how great your earphones are, there’s always one flaw that everyone hates – the earphone’s cord.  The most annoying part is when the cable flops around or get caught in something while you have the earphones on.  Klinggon solves that problem by providing a stable holder to keep the cable from moving around [...]

MediaTek sees no reason cheap phones can't have Ice Cream Sandwich too

Ice Cream Sandwich
If you don't want to drop $300 on a phone we don't blame you -- honestly, the idea makes us feel a bit dirty too. MediaTek doesn't seen any reason for it either. The company has been working its way in to the mobile chipset business for a little while now, and its latest is aimed squarely at the lower end of the handset spectrum but still promises to deliver the latest in dessert-themed operating systems. The MT6575 is a single core Cortex-A9 solution with an unidentified 5-series PowerVR GPU on board and an HSPA modem. The 1GHz core probably won't win and benchmark competitions, but it's enough to push Android 4.0 to a qHD screen, power through 720p video and capture shots with an 8 megapixel sensor. It even is capable of supporting 3D displays and DTV broadcasts -- not too bad for something destined to wind up in $50 smartphones. Checkout the complete PR after the break.
