DOJ greenlights bid by Apple, Microsoft and RIM to buy Nortel patents

The US Department of Justice didn't just give the go-ahead to Google's acquisition of Motorola today, it also gave the greenlight to a $4.5 billion bid on Nortel's patents from a consortium of companies including Apple, Microsoft and RIM (who have dubbed themselves Rockstar Bidco). Nortel's portfolio includes some 6,000 patents, and the DOJ says the approval comes after it received clear commitments from Apple and Microsoft to license so-called standard essential patents on "fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms, as well as their commitments not to seek injunctions in disputes involving SEPs." To round things out for the day, the Justice Department has also given its clearance to Apple's acquisition of certain Novell patents, which have been held by CPTN Holdings pending approval. Its full statement can be found after the break.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%

Firefox 4 usage share graph
Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla's noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4's meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the 'Important' Windows Update rolled out. It's hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out -- did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 -- a great browser by almost every metric -- was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it's serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

New LG CX2 render shows slimmer handset in white, with new software

Android Central

With Mobile World Congress less than two weeks away, we're starting to see images of even more unannounced devices leaking out online. The latest to appear is LG's successor to the Optimus 3D, the "CX2", or Optimus 3D MAX. This new leaked render shows a thin device in white, running what seems to be an updated version of LG's Optimus UI. LG's software is long overdue a visual refresh, so hopefully this new version will bring some much-needed improvements.

Alongside the new render, Korean site ETNews gave details of the device's size, weight and screen resolution. The site claims that the new device will sport a higher resolution 3D display, compared to the Optimus 3D's WVGA offering. Apparently LG has brought the device down to a thickness of just 9.8mm, and shaved 20 grams off its weight, too. The reported resolution increase is interesting, as it contradicts earlier reports that LG was sticking with WVGA for its second 3D phone. However, given the company's push towards 720p displays for its high end devices (as well as the reduction in visible resolution required for glasses-free 3D), we wouldn't be surprised to see a 720p IPS panel in this thing when it launches.

We'll know more about LG's next flagship device in just a few days, assuming the rumors of a MWC unveiling hold true.
