D-Link Wireless N Day/Night Home Network Camera (DCS-932L) Review

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a home body. I’d rather be home than anywhere else in the world. Sometimes I think that I would be perfectly happy as a hermit. Of course I’m not a hermit and I don’t keep myself barricaded in my house 24/7. I go to work every day, go [...]

BTJunkie Scurries Into the Shadows

BitTorrent search engine BTJunkie has abruptly shut down its website, giving its users a short and sweet goodbye: "We've decided to voluntarily shut down. We've been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it's time to move on." It appears likely that the move was a defensive maneuver in response to law enforcement's takedown of the Megaupload site in January.

Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

wordswithfriends
As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

How's the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

Android Central weekly photo contest: Lloyd was here

Lloyd was here

The theme for this week's photo contest is all about Lloyd.  We love him, you guys love him, and it's high time he got involved.  Take a pic of anything and drop Lloyd in place to oversee the activities for your chance to win a T-shirt featuring the one and only Lloyd himself!  This week we're giving prizes to the top five entries, so you have quintuple (that's a word, I looked it up) the chances of winning.

You might be asking, how exactly am I supposed to get Lloyd into my picture?  It's easier than it sounds.  You could grab an unmarked van and drive to AC headquarters and capture him (warning -- he's expensive to keep), or you could do it one of these easier ways:

  • Use an editing program on either your phone or your computer to stick him in place.  Here's a handy file with Lloyd on a transparent background (.png and .psd files are included) to help out.
  • Use the Camera ZOOM FX app ($2.99 in the Android Market) and the free Buddy Pack  to drop Lloyd right into place.  Camera ZOOM FX also includes a ton of features and filter effects, and is pretty easy to use.  The addition of Lloyd to the official Buddy Pack makes it easy to enter, and you've got a great app to use every day.

The rules are still the same.  You'll need to use an Android device to take the picture, and be sure to let us know which one in case your photo is selected as a finalist.  Also tell us who you are so we can give proper credit.  Only submit one picture per person, and e-mail your entry to pics@androidcentral.com by Friday Feb 10.  We'll pick the best of the bunch, and announce the winners on the blog Sunday, Feb 12.

Now go take some pictures!

Rogers launches LTE Rocket USB dongle and mobile hotspot, revamps 4G pricing

Rogers LTE
Hold on to your campaign hats people, Rogers has some blazingly fast new LTE devices for your consideration: the AirCard 330U LTE Rocket and AirCard 763S LTE mobile hotspot. Both Sierra Wireless 4G cards support the 1700MHz, 2100MHz and 2600MHz bands for theoretical peak downloads of 100Mbps, while real-world speeds will hover closer to 40Mbps. The latest dongle and hotspot for Rogers are the first to work on all three of its bands, and claim to be the fastest such devices in the land. The carrier is also extending its HSPA+ pricing scheme to its LTE network, meaning Flex Rate plans for the LTE Rocket stick and hotspot start at $22.93 per month, while tablets will be able to hop on the LTE bandwagon for just $7.93. Check out the PR after the break.
