Samsung aggressively aggregating acronyms as eMCP assembly activated

Samsung's started foundries rolling for its new embedded multi-chip package memory for budget smartphones -- after the success of the high-end modules that were released in October. eMCP jams together 30-nanometer low-power DDR2 DRAM and 20-nanometer NAND flash memory into a single slice of silicon. In real terms, this means that there's a 4GB e-MMC (embedded MultiMediaCard) flash chip with a 256MB, 512MB or 768MB DDR2 DRAM module bolted on the side. According to the company, it'll consume 25 percent less power with 30 percent better performance, cost less to jam into your telephone and probably make you smell better, too. If you're starting your own phone company, or just curious about embedded systems, head past the break for the PR.

Website Scaling, Part 2: The Metrics of Measuring

Measuring Web scalability is a critical component of website scaling. The way you do this in a testing environment is, of course, called "load testing." In this second series installment, I'll go over what Little's Law is and how it can be related to load testing, determining how to scale the Web and data layers. Finally, I'll share my tips for troubleshooting common scaling bottlenecks.

Microsoft adding Nokia branding to Bing Maps

Noki-soft? Micro-ia? The madness continues! Nokia front-man Stephen Elop let it be known that his company's moniker will be making its way to Bing Maps in the near future, and he's not just talking about on the desktop. During a CES interview with Pocket-lint, Elop explained that any "property" utilizing Microsoft's Bing Maps service -- including mobile platforms -- will be co-branded with the Nokia logo. "We are clearly placing a bet on the Windows Phone platform; they [Microsoft] are placing a bet on our location-based platform," he said. The CEO cited BlackBerry as a non-Windows Phone device that will see the Nokia tattoo in its Maps app -- RIM recently announced its intention to integrate Bing Maps at the OS level. No word on when Microsoft branding will make its way onto Nokia software... oh, wait a minute...

This 14" Lenovo Core i5 Laptop Is Your You-Can-Choose-Any-Color-As-Long-As-It-Is-Ebony-Brown Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

I'm so bored of computers it makes me sad. Ultrabooks? Ultrasnooze. Desktops? Ha. Netbooks? Wait, do Netbooks even exist anymore? Seriously though, I will upgrade my phone and tablet every year for here until infinity but I'm running my computer to the ground. I've had my laptop for almost 4 years now and it's still chugging along fine. What am I missing out on a brand spanking new laptop? Less oily keys? Non dusty display? I don't game on zee PC. I don't edit video. I don't do anything on a computer but go on winding Wikipedia knowledge trails and read about sports. So screw boring computers. Screw them to mundane hell. If you're not like me though, go ahead and buy the Lenovo IdeaPad Z470 14-inch Laptop for $580. If you are like me, enjoy the oily dusty betsy you got. -CC More »

Twitter Acquires, Shuts Down Social News Startup Summify

summifySummify, a startup that uses social data to create a personalized news digest, just announced that it has been acquired by Twitter. This sounds like a talent acquisition on Twitter's part — in other words, the main purpose of the acquisition was probably hiring the Summify team. Some of Summify's feature have been immediately disabled, it's no longer accepting new users, and in a few weeks, Summify says it will shut down the current product entirely. Meanwhile, the startup will be moving from Vancouver to San Francisco to work out of the Twitter office.
