Hollywood's Digital Movie Locker Finds a Home in Amazon and Samsung's Hallways [Streaming]

The UltraViolet Initiative hasn't exactly been the iTunes-killer Hollywood had hoped for. The File-Locker system, designed to simplify the process of owning one piece of content across multiple formats, has floundered in its first few months with poor reviews, unhappy customers and little industry support. But now that Amazon and Samsung have both invited UltraViolet over to the cool kid's table, it might actually have a shot. More »

Twitter Really, Really Hates Google’s New Google Integration

twitterblackThis morning, Google began rolling out a major change to its core search engine that intertwines results from Google+ (and Picasa) with the 'normal' algorithmically-generated results we've come to expect. There have been plenty of critiques of the news, including John Battelle's discussion on how this isn't actually integrating 'Your World', as Google calls it, but rather just its own social network. And now there's another critic that's coming out swinging: Twitter. Earlier today the company's General Counsel Alex Macgillivray, who was a top attorney at Google prior to making the jump to Twitter, called it "A bad day for the Internet", and stated that some of his former colleagues were likely upset by the decision to "warp" Google's results. And now Twitter itself has followed up with a statement denouncing the feature — and rather relying on the wishy-washy PR speak big companies are fond of, it's very direct. Here's the full statement:

Sony reveals SS-AR2 loudspeaker, wants an invite to your next house party

Sony has been quite busy chatting up new products for 2012 here at CES. One of the new pieces of tech is the SS-AR2 loudspeaker that looks to keep the up the reputation of its elder sibling in the R-Series line, the SS-AR1. Maple from Hokkaido, an island in northern Japan encloses all the important components and contributes to the overall sound quality. The SS-AR2 is a 4-unit, 3-way vented standing tower that sports a frequency response ranging from 42Hz to 60kHz. Distortion is combated by positioning the bass reflex port in just the right to spot to allow a duo of woofers to drive without a hitch. Birch partitions on the interior construct a well-insulated cavity keeping the midrange and tweeters just the right distance apart from the bass section -- and all those tones neat and tidy. NO word on pricing on availability as of yet, but you'll want to start bench pressing phone books before picking one up, as each unit tips the scale at 84 pounds.

XStylus Crayon for Nintendo 3DS/DS Review

I remember the day I eagerly unpacked my first Nintendo DS.  At the time it was revolutionary–a touch screen gaming platform.  I inserted my first game (Nintendogs!) and picked up the stylus for the very first time.  It was then that I noticed said stylus had apparently been sized for a toddler instead of an [...]

Dell's XPS 13 is their official entry into the Ultrabook market. BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 hands-on (video)

Highlighting RIM's presence at CES 2012 is the official unveiling of PlayBook OS 2.0. On track for a February arrival, this release will deliver many features that productivity-minded users have pined for since the tablet's arrival. First and foremost, we were given a demo of the PlayBook's new email client and address book. The new software is functional and intuitive, which offers a unified inbox, application integration and ties to social networks such as Twitter and LinkedIn. Also quite nice, the calendar displays both day and agenda views, along with the individuals you'll meet during the day. We also saw a quick demo of the BlackBerry Bridge functionality, which offers integration between the smartphone and tablet. While the PlayBook fell on its face a few times during this bit, we ultimately saw the smartphone successfully push web links and pictures to the tablet for easier viewing. Due to the Bridge hiccups, we noticed the PlayBook took especially long to boot, which RIM states is due to the support for Android apps. We were given a quick demo of this feature as well, and much to the company's relief, this segment went quite flawlessly and without fanfare. Be sure to check the full demonstration just after the break.
