MSI Wind U180 up for pre-order in Germany, 1.86GHz Atom N2800 included

Intel's newfangled Atom range isn't even a month old, but already MSI is putting it to good use. The company's Wind netbook range is seeing a new addition today in Germany, where the Wind U180 is up for pre-order on a host of sites. According to a product listing at Notebook.de, the 10.1-inch machine will ship with a 1,024 x 600 native resolution, 1.86GHz dual-core Atom N2800, a gig of memory, 320GB hard drive, GMA 3650 integrated graphics, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, an Ethernet port and a 0.3 megapixel webcam. You'll also get a token chiclet keyboard, a built-in SD / MMC card reader, a six-cell battery and Windows 7 Starter running the show. €349 (around $451) gets you in the door, but there's no telling when it'll actually ship. Here's hoping we get a better idea from the show floor in just a few days, eh?

Optrix VideoPro brings extreme data to your mundane iPhone clips

Optrix ViideoPro
"Extreme" mounts and cases for capturing video with your iPhone are a dime a dozen, but Optrix is offering something a little extra with its VideoPro app. When it becomes available later this month (for $9.99) the iOS video AR tool will lay all sorts of data over recordings of both your exciting and mundane activities -- including speed, lap time and g-force. (The latter very important for when you launch yourself off the couch and towards the fridge.) Optrix has been teasing us with demo clips since early December, but now it seems it's finally gearing up to unleash the app for real... though an actual date would be much appreciated. We'll be back with some hands-on from CES but, until then, check out the PR after the break.

The BenQ Facebook contest to help promote their new Joybee GP2 Mini Projector is in its last week. I just posted The Gadgeteer’s 2nd entry for that contest and am asking your help to win. This video is much better than my first one (if I do say so myself). I had a lot of [...]

Tobii Gazes into the future, sees you navigating Windows 8 with your eyes (video)

You may be waiting with baited breath for Microsoft to hurry up and release Windows 8 PCs and tablets to the masses, but before they get here, there might a twist to the way you tweak'em. Tobii Technology intends to demo its new mouse-free interface at CES this month -- dubbed Tobii Gaze -- that it hopes'll revolutionize the way we interact with devices. The gesture-based system incorporates eye-tracking to direct an on-screen pointer and works in conjunction with touch pad input for "fine-tuning." The company's hoping this new interface'll help you toss out that antiquated clicker and embrace the world of Minority Report. Hey, it's inevitable and you know it.

TidyTilt, a Cable-Wrangling Smart Cover for iPhone

TidyTilt is a Smart Cover for your iPhone. Only it covers the back of the iPhone instead of the screen. And it requires you run a steel strip around the edge of the phone’s rear panel. And–of course–it can’t activate the iPhone’s magnetic screen lock, because there isn’t one. Other than that, the TidyTilt is pretty [...]

Altaro Hyper-V Backup beta launched, only 250 places available

hyper-vbackupbeta
This one's for the sysadmins in the audience: Altaro, makers of our favorite "time machine for Windows" back solution, OopsBackup, have just announced a new product entering beta called Hyper-V Backup.

It's a backup solution for virtual machines running on Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization solution. If that sentence just seemed like a bunch of buzzwords crammed together, Hyper-V backup is not for you. But, if you actually use Hyper-V and are hankering for a good backup solution, Altaro might be worth checking out.

The beta run is limited - Altaro are looking for just 250 testers. All participants will get a free license key to the final, production version. So if you're interested in helping test Hyper-V Backup, get yourself over to Altaro now and join the beta.

Wooden Aerodyne PC makes you want to live in Rapture

If we were blessed with a fortune, a mansion and a butler, the first thing we'd do is contact Jeffrey Stephenson -- maker of truly beautiful art-deco wooden case mods. He's produced another stunner with the Aerodyne: a fanless mahogany case with Rocketeer-style accents and a radio grille (picture after the break) we'd expect to hear Andrew Ryan barking out of. Unlike his other mods, the amazing Mr Stephenson is planning a small run of these cases for people to buy, so the only thing left to ask is -- can anyone lend us a tenner?

Elan: 'Apple's paying us $5 million for multitouch patents'

Remember the longstanding patent punch-up 'twixt Cupertino and Elan Microelectronics? No? Well, Taiwan's Elan said that Apple infringed two of its multitouch patents, which the ITC disagreed with -- the judge stating he found no infringement and therefore no cause for an outright ban on sales of iDevices. Now, in a rather strange twist, and perhaps just to extricate itself from the case completely, The Haus of Tim is paying $5 million to Elan in an out-of-court settlement. Aside from the relatively paltry sum of cash, the settlement also allows the companies to cross-license each other's relevant patents -- a deal which might arguably serve Elan better than it serves Apple.
