Electric Skates for Sci-Fi Roller Diners

They might not be as temptingly dangerous as the 20mph gas-powered skates which were seized by British customs back in the summer of 2007, but Peter Treadway’s spnKiX more than make up for their lack of speed with their devil-may-care attitude to vowels and capital letters. The spnKiX are rather dully described as “wearable mobility,” but [...]

I Am Not Brave Enough To Stick This LED Contact Lens in My Eye [Video]

While YouTuber bkraz333 claims this contact lens with an embedded LED he made was an attempt to add a rudimentary VR display to his eye, I think I know the real inspiration behind it—Terminator cosplay. More »

Google Books for Chrome gets offline support, one less excuse for not reading the 'classics'

Google Books Offline
So, you can read all those tomes you've picked up through Google Books offline on your smartphone and tablet, but what about on your laptop? Well, if for some reason you've got the desire to power through Finnegans Wake in your browser (though, we're not really sure why you'd do that to yourself) we've got good news -- the Google Books app for Chrome now caches your titles for local reading. To download a book, just hover over the cover in library view and select "make available offline" from the pop-up. Then, even when you can't get your Chromebook connected, you'll be able to sit back and relax with a classic novel or seedy romance tale.

Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

cueboyquest
Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they're large too. Simply beautiful!

In A Reversal, Intuit Will Make Quicken 2007 For Mac Work With Lion

quicken2007macIntuit has just released some good news for  "Quicken for Mac" users.  The accounting software company says they will have a solution that makes Quicken 2007 for Mac "Lion-compatible" by early spring 2012. Yes, irony alert. Back in July, I wrote about the dilemma facing those users, because Apple Lion OS was dropping support for Rosetta.  Without Rosetta, Quicken 2007 wouldn't run on the Mac with Lion.  And I wrote each of the three options Intuit proposed (Quicken Essentials for Mac, Mint.com, Quicken for Windows) had their own flaws. Aaron Forth, Intuit's General Manager of its Personal Finance Group which includes Quicken and Mint.com, wrote a note to existing customers saying "I am committed to creating products to help you reach your financial goals.  I recognize, however, that we have not always delivered on this promise to Quicken Mac customers."

YOUBIQ’s Gymbl Pro Grip and Tripod for iPhone 4 and 4S

The iPhone 4 has a pretty good camera, so you can get some nice shots.  But you’ve got to admit, it can be a bit slippery to hold while you’re taking a picture.  It’s also too narrow to sit on its own, so you can’t set it on the table to steady the camera, and [...]
