Vector Unit announces new game Shine Runner, available now

Shine Runner

Vector Unit, the folks behind Riptide GP (one of the best games for Android ever), has let us know that a new title -- Shine Runner -- will be available tomorrow in the Android Market.  Imagine the same type of amazing physics and graphics used for futuristic Jet-Skis in Riptide GP, but imported into a moonshine runners airboat deep in the southern swamps, complete with gators, shacks, stumps, and revenuers.  The game's goal is to maximize your score over a ten day period of smuggling through rivers and bayous, while keeping a step ahead of Johnny Law.  But I think I'm going to end up with the same mindset as Ralf Knoesel, Vector Unit’s Technical Director, who says:

Our theme for this game is simple.  Two words: ’Redneck Chaos.’ Yes, there’s strategy to the trading meta-game, but personally I just love smashing alligators into chicken coops, punting cops off the tops of levies… I’ve been working on Shine Runner for months now and I still laugh when I’m playing.

You had me at redneck chaos, Ralf.  Hit the jump to see a few more screenshots and a gameplay trailer, then join me as we all wait patiently for tomorrow.

Samsung 'Optical Sensor in Pixel' LCDs rolling out, ready for Surface 2.0

Samsung SUR40
With Samsung's Microsoft Surface product, the SUR40, already available for pre-order, the company says its 1080p 40-inch "Optical Sensor in Pixel" LCD panels have gone into mass production. Those optical sensors help to more accurately interpret multi-touch input without interrupting display signals, offering a more fluid, interactive experience. Tempered glass overlaying the display supports 176 pounds of load and up to 50 touch points at once, which should be more than enough for a Pacific Giant Octopus or any jerk that leans on your $8K table. While the SUR40 is certainly a showcase device for these panels, it isn't the only practical application -- Samsung says it's thin enough and light enough to wall-mount, and hopes to see it used by stock brokers, financial analysts and schools.

Keeping Your Devices Powered While on the Road

Think of the devices that have been made redundant by smartphones: landline phone, laptop computer, GPS receiver, map, compass, flashlight, still camera, video camera, gaming console, calculator, wristwatch, electronic photo frame, newspaper, magazine, book, radio, weather radio, police scanner, MP3 player, television, home entertainment system remote control, main street bank, tape measure, bubble level, and coming up, your wallet.

Google Talk Guru answers questions via your IM app

google talk guru answersBots -- like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave -- are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn't have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like "score detroit red wings" or "sushi R3N 1Y1."

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It's well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

Nikon AW100 Coolpix – A Rugged Camera for an Active Lifestyle

This past spring I decided to purchase a waterproof camera and was pleasantly surprised to find they’ve come a long way since the disposables with the plastic housings.  Every top manufacturer had at least one camera in their rugged line with features such as being waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof–but Nikon was mysteriously absent.  Five months later, [...]

Carrier IQ, in a new press release, reminds us it works for the carriers

Carrier IQ

Carrier IQ has issued a new press release defending its business and reminding us all that it works not unilaterally, but for the operator -- the carrier. The nut:

Carrier IQ acts as an agent for the Operators. Each implementation is different and the diagnostic information actually gathered is determined by our customers – the mobile Operators. Carrier IQ does not gather any other data from devices.

We've got a massive discussion coming up on the podcast, folks.

Check out the whole press relase for yourself after the break.

Soggy Doggy Super Shammy Review

Keep the towels in the linen closet. Your answer to fast drying your wet dog is finally here. I’m not crazy about most do-it-yourself dog grooming products because most of them are long on promises and short on delivery. And they’re expensive.  For that kind of money, I can just take my pooch over to [...]
