InterDigital sells nearly 2,000 wireless patents to Intel, pockets $375 million

InterDigital (we interviewed its CEO last week) is selling off around 1,700 wireless patents and applications to Intel for $375 million. The company is making good on its promise to monetize its vast portfolio of IP, including technologies relating to 3G, WCDMA, HSDPA, HUSPA, LTE and 802.11 WiFi connections. It's a short in the arm for Intel's burgeoning wireless arm, which recently outed its first handset, the San Diego. It'll also strengthen the hand of the company in any litigation relating to the technology should the lawyers come knocking. So far it's not clear if the company is retaining an interest in the files its sold off, but we've reached out for comment and will let you know when we do.

Update: The company let us know that it's not retaining any interest in the patents that it's selling off. It also mentioned that the 1,700-strong portfolio equates to around eight percent of the company's overall IP holdings -- a number that it generates roughly every 18 months.

Tomy BattroBorg 20 runs on motioncontrolled punches, rocks 'em and socks 'em Wiistyle

The last time we saw someone move the game on for Rock'em Sock'em Robots, it was a motion-controlled experiment that was unlikely to see the light of day. Tomy must have been frustrated enough waiting for the practical reality to take matters into its own hands, as it's just unveiled the BattroBorg 20, a fighting robot that... lets you take matters into your own hands. The toy uses a Wii-style nunchuk motion controller that translates the player's own thrusts into the plastic robot's punches. Each robot can tell if it's been decked, although it takes just five punches to win by TKO -- these aren't exactly Queensbury rules. At an estimated $50 for each robot and matching controller on the July 14th release date, the BattroBorg isn't the cheapest way to relive the glory days of pint-sized fisticuffs, but it's certainly the most involving.

Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted

windows 8 wallpaper
With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it's inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first "official" wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it's got a similar feel to the good ol' Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet's source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape -- though all that's been located thus far are "[various files] scattered throughout the OS" and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends' presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.

US 3G and 4G networks face off once more, Verizon just squeaks out win over AT&T

US 3G and 4G networks face off once more, Verizon just squeaks out an edge over AT&T

Competition for the US cellular speed crown is certainly fiercer than it was last year, when Verizon's 4G LTE let it walk over the competition unimpeded. With AT&T's LTE in the running, though, have the ranks changed? No, but only just barely: as PCMag discovered in its annual countrywide testing, Verizon mostly trumped its fellow telecom giant in upload speeds and reliability. AT&T could once more claim to be best in a category with the fastest downloads, although it's counterbalanced by having a considerably smaller LTE network. For everyone outside of T-Mobile and its still very respectable HSPA+ network, it's better luck next year. We'll be most intrigued then, quite frankly -- in addition to 2013 giving us a genuinely functional Sprint LTE network, that's when we could see a blistering-fast T-Mobile LTE-Advanced produce an upset victory.

NEC LifeTouch L unveiled: Android 4.0 tablet keeps it thin and light (video)

NEC Lifetouch L unveiled keeps Android 40 thin and light

Still looking for that perfect 10-inch Android tablet? Well here's another one slab aiming for your wallet. NEC's latest attempt is the LifeTouch L and lands in 16GB and 32GB sizes, with a business option (with unchanged hardware) on the sidelines. The consumer-facing models are set to arrive on July 5th, with a dual-core 1.5GHz processor running the Android 4.0-based show and despite a 10-inch (1280 x 800) display, it all weighs in at a gentle 540 grams (19 ounces). The tablet also slims down to just -- and we mean just -- under 8mm, or 7.99mm (0.31 inches) to be precise, putting it below even the svelte Toshiba Excite 10. If the substantially heavier 45,000 yen ($570) price tag doesn't make you balk, there's a brief product tour after the break.

Did Apple and Book Publishers Collude to Break Amazon's Monopoly on Ebooks? [Lawsuits]

In April, the Department of Justice filed an antitrust complaint against Apple and four major book publishers alleging that they colluded against Amazon by setting prices. As The New Yorker points out, that's hard to prove, but either way, their cooperation may have broken Amazon's early monopoly on ebooks. This lawsuit could give Amazon its power back. More »

Can You Really Bang Out a Wicked Drum Solo at 65 MPH? [Motorcycles]

We're not sure about the provenance of this totally bad-ass BMW motorcycle outfitted with a drum kit side car. It could be from a custom builder who loves percussion as much as they do biking, or just a marketing stunt waiting to go viral. More »

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won't get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer -- only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There's no guarantee this app hasn't been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.
