Xume, Quick-Release Magnet Adapters for Lens Filters

The promo video for Xume’s quick-release camera filters starts off in typical infomercial style, with a klutz ham-fistedly trying to do something that’s actually pretty easy. But this doesn’t take away from the neatness of the product, a filter attachment that uses magnets — frikkin’ magnets! — to speed up an otherwise tedious task. It’s ingeniously [...]

Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

internet explorer 9 ie9
Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers -- Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista... what's with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It's also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9's Windows 7 integration features -- like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft's IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

This Awesome Image of the Space Station Could Be a Lost Star Wars Frame [Space]

This blurry image could be a lost Star Wars frame but it's real. I've spent about five minutes looking at it in silence, thinking about how would it feel to be that astronaut. His name is Ron Garan. More »

LG Optimus EX gets official in Korea, sporting 1.2GHz Tegra 2 chip, 700 nits of brightness

So, about that LG Optimus EX we saw last week -- it's now gone official in South Korea and it's looking slightly more alluring. Announced yesterday, this Gingerbread-coated handset is the first to ship with NVIDIA's revamped 1.2GHz Tegra 2 processor, which means it'll support 1080p video, much like the Galaxy S II. It also boasts a four-inch LCD with 480 × 800 resolution and a full 700 nits of brightness, along with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage, a five megapixel camera and front-facing VGA shooter. Available in either black and silver or white and gold color schemes, the EX is slated to launch on Korea's SK Telecom at an unspecified price, though plans for an international release remain unclear. As soon as we find out, however, we'll be sure to let you know.

‘Social Bomb’ Covertly Cuts Off Twitter, Facebook

The very best thing about a concept design is that you don’t have to explain how it works. It’s like being a kid again, where a pair of toilet paper tubes become a telescope, or an upturned traffic cone becomes the biggest — and therefore best — ice-cream container ever. So we won’t attempt to peek [...]

London Science Museum undusts Oramics machine, revisits OG electronic music innovation

Practicing its fist pump and channeling its inner Devo, the London Science Museum will be paying homage to electronic music pioneer Daphne Oram by resurrecting her old synthesizer last used in the '70s -- a device that relies on 35mm film to pump out jams. The classic clunker was found in a French barn last month and will be brought out into the open for the first time in forty years at the museum in old Blighty. "Oramics" operators "draw" music on ten strips of clear film to create a mask. The machine then reads the tape as differences in light and turns it into voltage control, which is used to switch oscillators and control the amplitude of the sound. The effect? A creepy vortex of haunting sounds. Fans of glow sticks and synth sounds can check out the exhibit until December, but if a trip to Londontown's not in your future, there's a video you should ogle after the break.
