The Guy Behind The Qwikster Twitter Account Realizes What He Has, Wants A Mountain Of Cash

elmlolLast night, Jason went to bed a normal man, with a normal Twitter account (albeit one with a weed-smoking Elmo as the avatar), and a few dozen followers. This morning, Jason woke up to an inbox full of messages, thousands of new followers, and wants to sell his account for many thousands of dollars. As we chronicled last night, Netflix made a rather fundamental mistake in launching their new spin-off brand, Qwikster: they didn't make sure they had the name locked down on all of the big social networks before making the announcement. As Jason's luck had it, he had long owned the @Qwikster handle. He's willing to part with it — he just wants to make sure he'll "be making bank" first.

A Pool So Green It'll Look And Feel Almost Like A Lake [Design]

Pools are great for cooling off but they're not very green. They use lots of electricity, are kept clean with harsh chemicals and create an artificial landscape that screams "I love vinyl." But it doesn't have to be that way. More »

Arduino brings the (new) goods to Maker Faire New York, welcomes ARM into the fold

Arduino at Maker Faire
When Arduino unveiled a boatload of new products on Friday, we could have taken the easy route, posted the PR and called it a day. But, since the crew happened to be in town for Maker Faire, with a few folks from Atmel (makers of the AVR chip at the heart of the open source MCU) in tow, we figured why not go straight to the source. Arduino founder Massimo Banzi gave us a look at the company's latest offerings: the ARM-powered Arduino Due, the low-cost Arduino Leonardo, and aptly-named Arduino WiFi, as well as a peek at some of the group's upcoming plans. Keep on reading after the break for the juicy details.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

Samsung seeking to block sales of upcoming iPhone in Korea

Samsung

What the world needs now is more litigation to stifle technology innovation, and Samsung looks determined to follow Apple's lead and try to make it happen.  In an interview with the Korea Times, and unnamed senior executive from Samsung Electronics has said that Samsung is preparing to attempt to block all sales of the upcoming iPhone in Korea.  He also gives a bit of insight into the mind of Samsung corporate, telling us that Samsung was willing to let the "copycat" argument go so that the relationship with Apple (who uses Samsung parts in many of their products) was not put under stress.  Apple's complaint and subsuquent injunction against Samsung at IFA in Germany, which caused the highly anticipated 7.7 inch variant of the Galaxy Tab to be pulled from the show, created a turning point of sorts, where Samsung has filed against Apple for technology patents in Australia

In Korea, Samsung is preparing to say that unless Apple drops mobile telecommunication functions from it's iPhone, it would be impossible for it not to infringe on Samsung's mobile patents.  The patents in question, as well as the total number, were not identified.  As a result, Samsung wants all sales of the new iPhone blocked in Korea.

It saddens me to see Samsung follow this path.  Competition is healthy for the entire mobile eco-system, and having an "eye for an eye" attitude only hurts the consumer.  Unfortunateley, Apple's current strategy of domination through lawsuits looks like it may have awoken a sleeping giant -- Samsung is one of the largest electronic manufacturing compaines in the world, and likely holds patents that many other manufacturers are infringing upon, as does Motorola (Nokia flashback, anyone?).  In the end, someone with a lot of money will be giving a little of it to someone else with a lot of money, but nobody really wins in these types of war games.

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme
In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Belkin’s Taco-Shaped Thunderbolt Dock

If you own a new Thunderbolt-equipped MacBook Air, you probably have an eye on Apple’s new 27-inch Thunderbolt monitor, with its mess of expansion ports out back which will let you turn laptop into desktop by plugging in just one cable. But before you ditch your perfectly good monitor and drop a grand on a [...]

Mr Fussy mods Samsung Galaxy S for inductive charging, without frazzling warranty (video)

It's not hard to find a good inductive charging smartphone these days, but German IT student Qian Qin absolutely had to have the feature on his Galaxy S Plus. What's more, it needed to be just right: no voiding of the warranty and no unsightly protrusions. So, instead of bumping his gums, he went out and purchased a Palm Pre back cover and a Touchstone dock for €30 ($40), ripped the charging circuit out of the Pre cover and stuck it into the Samsung's cover, then finally soldered a wire from the circuit to the micro-USB port (plus another wire to the microSD slot for 0V). Job done. At first, the mere mention of a webOS device gave us a twinge of sadness, but then the video after the break cheered us right up again -- you can tell within the first six seconds that this guy is a pure OCD perfectionist. You'll also find more detailed instructions at the source link, and they should work equally well for the original Galaxy S too.

GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X

GNOME 3 desktop manager
GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a "completely new, modern desktop designed for today's users and technologies."

The best way to check out GNOME 3's new features -- and it has lots of new features -- is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren't actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros -- it's the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you're feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.
