SK Telecom leak suggests quad-core, 2GB Galaxy S III may be Korea-bound

Android Central

Rumors of a special Korea-only version of the Galaxy S III stem back to a report from The Korea Times just over a month ago. Since then, things have been pretty quiet -- international markets have gotten the quad-core HSPA+ version, while LTE territories have received the dual-core Snapdragon S4 model. Now a leaked internal image from Korean carrier SK Telecom suggests the reports may be true, and that Samsung's home territory may end up with an S III variant sporting a quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM.

The image obtained by PhoneArena lists the following specs for the rumored device --

  • Quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412 with CPU clocked @ 1.4GHz
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD screen
  • 4.82 ounces (136.5 grams)
  • 0.35 inches (9mm)

Eagle-eyed readers will note that's a little thicker and a little heaver than the international HSPA+ version, so it could well be the case that we're dealing with a whole new device here, rather than a typo or error on the carrier's part. No word on LTE connectivity yet, though Exynos 4's lack of built-in LTE would make this unlikely. In any case, we'll be watching with interest (and maybe a little bit of envy) to see whether Korea does eventually get the best of both worlds with its version of the Galaxy S III.

Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla's increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs' current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change -- some URLs might change, but that's it -- and presumably Messaging's F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user -- for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users -- is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year -- and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs' sleeve!

Thousands of iPad Apps Is that All it Has to Offer?

The mad rush to get hold of an iPad certainly led a lot of people to believe that this nifty little gadget would put a smart phone to shame. AVG launches LiveKive cloud sync and backup tool

avg livekive dropbox
A while back, we told you about AVG's new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG's odd choice of monikers -- LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it's lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG's strong presence on Android we wouldn't be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can't even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you're not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

Linux lands on Android 4.0-toting MK802 mini PC

Linux lands on Android-toting MK802 mini PC

If the MK802 piqued your interest but has you pining for Ubuntu, Linux Questions forum user michaelfisk has a solution. The secret sauce is a pre-baked image of Ubuntu 10.04 modified for a different device using the same 1.5 GHz Allwinner processor. Simply slide a microSD card prepped with a bootable image of the distro into the mini PC and you're set. Though Lucid Lynx can be coaxed to run on the $74 mini PC without considerable hassle, performance isn't exactly top notch -- unseemly load times and a few kinks are reportedly throughout the experience. Eager to load up your Cotton Candy competitor with Linux? Hop past the break to see Liliputing give it a test drive or hit the links below for walkthroughs and the appropriate download.

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power
Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you're running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you're seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

The Re-Imagination Of Everything: I’m Pissed That The Future’s Not Here Fast Enough

Screen Shot 2012-06-09 at 8.03.13 PMI've seen the future, and it consists of a 5 foot eleven-inch hologram of Tupac rapping onstage with an incredibly stoned Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre at Coachella. Despite all the (consumer Internet) startups I interact with, with the possible exception of TaskRabbit, Dropbox and Uber, this pretty old-school hologram technology applied in this completely novel use case is the closest I've ever come to feeling like I live in the future.

How to restore the functionality the Apple v HTC war has taken away [root]

EVO 4G LTE

So you have a modern (read one that has or is going to get ICS) HTC Android phone, and want to restore the hyperlinked data option menu that Apple spent millions of dollars to take away from you? Hell, yeah, you do. We don't blame you one bit -- these phones were made for hackin' so hack them! You'll need to be rooted, and so far this is confirmed to be working on the EVO 3D, the EVO 4G LTE, and the One X, but it's easy to try on other devices as well. Big thanks to steal25 over at XDA for figuring out an easy method.

Back up your current system/build.prop, because we're going to edit it a little bit. You can either do this on the phone -- remember to mount /system as read/write -- or pull the file with adb and do it on your computer. If you choose the latter, be sure to use a text editor that has Unix line breaks and not Windows. Notepad++ will do the job just fine. What you'll need to edit:

  • Find the line ro.da1.enable=true
  • Change it to ro.da1.enable=false
  • Directly under it add the line ro.da1.method=false
  • Reboot

When your phone restarts, those links for phone numbers and Youtube videos and everything else in mail and messages should work like we're used to seeing them work, and all will be well with the world. The app associations in settings will also be gone, because you don't need them any longer. It's an easy way to make your phone work as designed, and a big stick in the eye of the goons in Cupertino.

If you're not sure what we're talking about here, or have any other questions, jump into the forums and ask a few questions. The fellas are there that know what you need to know and love talking about it.
