Proof That TED Is Past Its Prime [Video]

A few weeks ago we posited that TED—the conference series made of tiresome talks—had diluted its brand and become a place that needed more censorship instead of less. And now Buzzfeed has dug up objective proof, sifting through the mud barrel of videos on the TED site to bring you the 50 worst. More »

Mophie's Juice Pack PRO aims to keep iPhone 4 / 4S protected and powered during wild adventures

Mophie's Juice Pack PRO aims to keep iPhone 4 4S protected and powered during wild adventures

Staying true to its peripheral nature, Mophie's outed yet another iPhone companion: the Juice Pack PRO. Although the new power-boosting case doesn't carry as much juice as that Powerstation (not surprising, really), it does offer similar ruggedized aesthetics -- which should come in handy the next time you decide to take your Cupertino handset on a hazardous trip. Mophie notes the Juice Pack PRO can more than double the iPhone 4 / 4S life with its 2,500mAh battery, but the company's also placing a hefty amount of focus on the add-on's water splash, sand, impact and shock protection features -- these, naturally, earned the PRO a MIL-STD 810G (Military Standard) rating on the testing grounds. If all that makes this Juice the one for you, then gather up $130 and head over to the Mophie site to snag one for yourself.

Heroes Call for iPhone and iPad review

Heroes Call recently made a big splash onto the App Store, touting itself as a viable mobile alternative for Diablo fans. Gameloft's tried-and-true Dungeon Hunters series has typically claimed that title, but is there another that can hack and slash its way into our hearts while navigating the perilous trappings of the freemium model?

Google holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for Android

Android Honeycomb
Google, in an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, will not be open-sourcing Android 3.0 Honeycomb for the foreseeable future.

Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won't affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.

As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. "To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs," says Andy Rubin, the head of Google's Android group. "We didn't want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut."

In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb -- it doesn't want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.

Can Paying Friends Be Fun? Venmo Features “News Feed Of Payments” In Redesigned App

Venmo App Redeisgn"Josh paid Aaron $391 for best Coachella weekend ever". Peer-to-peer payments app Venmo thinks that when you pay someone back for drinks, dinner, or concert tickets, you're really sharing memories, and your friends will want to see. So today it relaunches its iOS, Android, and BlackBerry apps with a news feed of payments now featured on the homescreen. [Update 6:00 EST: Venmo just published a blog post with some product change specifics.] The redesign follows interface trends from Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram so Venmo is more familiar for first-timers, and puts the "Pay" button in the navigation bar so you can quickly settle your debts. It has also notified users via email that payments now default to publicly visible to other Venmo'ers. 42% of payments on Venmo were already being shared, even though its news feed was buried deep in the app. Will the redesign be enough to fend off PayPal and help Venmo go mainstream?

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?
