New Sony PlayStation 3 model suggested in FCC filing

New Sony PlayStation 3 model suggested in FCC filing

Hawk-eyed FCC watchers over at PocketNews have spotted some curious paperwork for an unknown PS3 model called the "CECH-4001X." The current, existing slimline PS3 is the 3000 series, and it has its FCC label in a different location to that shown in the new filing, leading Eurogamer to suggest that this could be a "Super Slim" variant -- which that site says has cropped up in separate rumors circulating before Gamescom next month. At this point, it's probably too much to hope that magic number "4" represents anything more significant.

This Slit-Scan Video Will Break Your Brain [Video]

This video shows every day scenes in a city, in the most impossibly awesome and freaky and mind-twisting way I can imagine. It's the antithesis of the soothing time-lapses we are used to: a slit-scan video. What is it? Kamil Sladek explains: More »

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

hp google cloud print
HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you're ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you've got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well -- like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We're curious, though -- how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites -- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com -- have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power
Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you're running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you're seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

Motorola Atrix HD becomes official - HD display, LTE and 'Kevlar strong'

Android Central

We all saw the leaks of a new Motorola smartphone apparently heading the way of AT&T, codename Dinara, and now the leaks have become an official device. Behold, the Motorola Atrix HD. And, it's a pretty handsome looking thing too, being available in two colors, titanium and modern white.

Once again from Motorola too, we've got a healthy dose of Kevlar in the construction. But, perhaps more impressive design wise, is the on-screen Android 4.x buttons. And, if the render shown here is anything to go by, they seem to blend into the homescreen pretty well, not like the solid black band we see on the Galaxy Nexus.

So, specs, what are we looking at? Quite a bit in truth, but we'll focus on the ones you're likely more interested in:

  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 4.5-inch 1280x720 HD Colorboost display
  • Gorilla Glass
  • 8GB on-board storage, with expandable microSD card slot
  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor
  • 8MP rear camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording, 1.3MP front facing camera
  • 1780mAh battery
  • 1GB RAM
  • LTE

All in all, not too shabby. Nothing groundbreaking, but simply having expandable storage alone will be enough to sway many into purchasing the Atrix HD. Motorola also seems to be pushing this as a potential business purchase, by proudly declaring it as "business ready." The "Government grade encryption" promises to keep your data safe, while the VPN will keep you connected to the office whilst out on the road.

As one would expect from Motorola, Webtop is also along for the ride. As too, is the usual array of OEM accessories. Theres a HD dock, a travel VGA adaptor, and a smart controller that gives you complete control of the phone remotely while it is connected to an external display.

There's no word as yet on when the Atrix HD will be going on sale, but the AT&T branding seen here in the official render at least gives us a pretty hefty clue on where it will be going on sale. For now, interested potential buyers can head over to the official product page at Motorola, and sign up now.

Sony releases tiny robots across the UK, catch one to win a phone

Android Central

As part of its latest marketing effort, Sony will be "releasing" thousands of tiny QR code-equipped robots in London and Manchester. And in return for capturing one of the elusive 'bots, the manufacturer will be giving Brits the chance to win a selection of Sony swag, including Xperia smartphones. In addition to breaking out in to the real world, Sony tells us the "Xperiabots" will be making an appearance online too, presumably in ad banners and social media.

The contest kicks off next Monday, and the prize list for successful 'bot capturers includes --

  • Latest Xperia NXT Series handsets
  • Sony 4-Screen packages
  • Tickets to movie premiers
  • DJ sessions
  • Tickets to gigs etc

Sony Mobile says clues will be distributed through social media channels, including the company's official Facebook page, and a new Twitter account set up for the "leader bot" @XperiaUnleashed. So if you live in the UK, you may want to keep your eyes peeled for hints over the next few days.

Sony patents exercise music system that adjusts music to your work-out tempo

Sony patents exercise music system that adjusts music to your preferred tempo, make the burn sting a little less

While our bodies approach beach-readiness for the summer, Sony's unveiled plans to tinker with your gym playlist in the future. According to a patent granted today, the electronics manufacturer aims to closely tie the tempo of your music to your own physical exertions. It'll do this by using a nefarious-sounding (but ultimately vague) "exercise information analyzing circuit" that will pick up on tempo differences between the user and their favorite Pendulum tracks. It will then change the "music data" for something a little more fitting for your 10-minute trudge at 10 percent incline. The patent's sketches include the idea of personalized profiles for users, and displaying what you got done at the end of the session, broken down by tempo and duration. The technology could end up in PMPs or phones, although we reckon the latter has more legs. Give your legalese its own workout and peruse the laborious wording of another patent filing at the source below.
